Let’s make a Rum Rita!

The Key Ingredients for a Rum Rita Recipe

This recipe is for a really simple cocktail made with good ingredients.  It’s going to have the same citrusy flavor of a traditional margarita, but with rum.

I love this drink because the flavor combination just works well.

For the exact measurements of the ingredients please see the recipe card below.

Rum

Rum

Use a good quality rum when you make this drink.  A light rum, also called white rum, is what is normally substituted for tequila.  The type of rum is really up to you.

If you’re someone who prefers a dark rum, try it out and see what you think.

Triple Sec

Triple Sec

Triple sec is an orange liqueur that hails from France.  It’s going to add a little citrus flavor to the cocktail.

Lime Juice

Lime Juice

I always suggest using fresh lime juice whenever you can.  You can also use a good quality bottled lime juice if you have one.

Garnish

A simple garnish of a lime wedge and a salt rim is all you need for the Rum Rita.  If you want to get fancy, that’s up to you.

How to Make a Rum Rita Cocktail

This is pretty easy.  After a few simple steps you’ll have the best rum margarita around.

Start off by adding the rum, triple sec and lime juice to a cocktail shaker full of ice.

Shake it up really well for about 15-20 seconds.

Take a margarita glass, salt the rim of the glass and fill it with fresh ice.

Strain the contents of the shaker into the glass and garnish with a wedge of lime.

That’s it!

Yes. I have good news for you. Just like there are many different margarita recipes out there, you can get really creative with the Rum Rita.

You can also try using flavored rums.  Mango rum and coconut rum are some fun things to try out.

What can be used as a substitute for Triple Sec?

If you don’t have Triple Sec or want to use something different, there are some good alternatives.  You can use Grand Marnier or Cointreau.  You can also add a little splash of orange juice and simple syrup.

What is the best glass to use for a Rum Rita?

Sometimes you’ll see a Margarita glass with a stem being used.  If you want to use something more versatile you can use a stemless rocks glass.
