Bärenjäger Honey Cocktail Recipe: Honey Bourbon Smash

Bärenjäger Cocktail

I need to let you in on a little unknown secret. And that secret is Bärenjäger, the original honey liqueur. Guys, this stuff is straight-up delicious.

This iconic German honey liqueur has always held a special place in my heart. Its vibrant history dates back to the 15th century, when “Bärenjäger” literally translated to “bear hunter.” Another possible translation for Bärenjäger, especially in historical contexts, is bear trap,” but this meaning is less common.

Today, the honeyed spirit continues to captivate cocktail enthusiasts like myself with its smooth texture and distinct flavor, offering endless possibilities beyond the simple “shot” or “straight-up” routine.

Some might view Bärenjäger as a one-dimensional drink. But recently, I discovered its true potential. This versatile liqueur can be the missing ingredient in various classic and contemporary cocktails.

Bärenjäger honey liqueur uses the highest concentration of natural honey, creating a smooth and distinct flavor profile. This makes it a perfect choice for crafting delicious and unique cocktails, whether you’re a professional mixologist or just starting your home bar journey.

What to Mix with Bärenjäger: The Basics

Balancing the sweetness:

  • Citrus: Lemon juice, lime juice, grapefruit juice, or orange juice can add tartness and brightness to cut through the sweetness of this honey-flavored liqueur.
  • Sour Spirits: Gin, vodka, or tequila can add a base spirit without overpowering the honey flavor.

Complementing the honey flavor:

  • Spiced Spirits: Irish whiskey, bourbon, or rye can add a warming spice character that complements the honey.
  • Apple Cider: The sweetness and acidity of apple cider pair well with natural honey, creating a fall-inspired drink.

Now that I’ve covered the basics, let’s get into my favorite drink, Barenjager Honey Liqueur: The Honey Bourbon Smash! This great cocktail is my go-to when I want something refreshing that still packs a punch. It’s like summer in a glass, with the sweetness of honey balanced by the kick of bourbon and a hint of citrus.

Here’s how I whip it up: First, I grab a rocks glass and toss in the honey and a couple of mint leaves. I don’t go crazy muddling them, just a light press with the back of a spoon to release those fragrant oils.

Then, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice goes in – gotta have that tartness to cut through the sweetness.

Now comes the good stuff: an ounce of Bärenjäger Honey Liqueur. Don’t forget the bourbon, about an ounce and a half for a good balance.

Now, all that’s left is to fill the glass with ice and stir it up gently. You don’t want to bruise the mint too much, but you want everything nice and chilled.

Finally, the finishing touch. I like throwing in a fresh mint sprig for a bit of green and that lovely aroma. Take a sip, and you’ll be hit with a wave of cool mint, bright citrus, and smooth honey sweetness. The bourbon warms you from the inside out, and everything goes down so easily. It’s perfect for a hot summer day, catching up with friends on the porch, or unwinding after a long week.
